A quick trip and some questions

This past weekend we made a quick (as in very quick) trip to Utah.

We left Friday night, got in around 1:00am Utah time, and then left on Sunday around 4pm.

Definitely not long enough.

We visited with family and friends and made a trip to see Ruby.

We made her grave all girly with Valentine’s decor.

(That flower is solar-powered and dances in the sun, love it)

(Luke’s contribution is the red monkey)

It was good to see her grave decorated again.

Last night was the very first time Jared, Luke, and myself tried brussel sprouts.

I made this recipe.

They weren’t too bad actually.

I don’t think I would specifically seek out and buy them, but if I have them on hand I would cook them up again.

What do you think of brussel sprouts?

*************************************************************************

Have any of you ever potty-trained a child while they are still in a crib?

I really don’t want to move Luke to a toddler bed until it’s absolutely necessary.

So, is it absolutely necessary that I move him when I potty train or is there a way around it?

*************************************************************************

My favorite Luke-isms right now are:

When he first takes a bite of his food and says, “Mmmm, dood” (good)

When he takes a drink, swallows and says, “Aahhh” like it is so refreshing

When he tells me he wants a “smooch”

Out of the blue he will come up and kiss my hand or leg

*************************************************************************

Luke has his very first dentist appointment on Thursday, any advice?

************************************************************************

I am having a really hard time deciding on what to put on Ruby’s headstone.

I want it to be just right, but everything I have seen just doesn’t fit.

The only thing that we have decided on is to use a stone called Ruby Red.

Anyone have any suggestions for a image, emblem or design we could put on it?

A lot of the designs I have seen look like they were designed back in 1984.

What about a saying or a quote?

We have thought about using the scripture from Proverbs 3:15 or the quote,  In our arms for a moment, In our hearts forever.

We also like the saying, I loved you yesterday, I love you still, I always have, I always will.

I would love any suggestions.

Tomorrow starts the countdown to Love day.

Make sure you do something great for the ones you love!

  1. Can't say I've ever had brussel sprouts- they sound interesting! Potty training- if you think Luke is ready, go for it. Mine wore diapers to bed for awhile so I think still being in a crib would be fine. I had my kids in toddler beds fast, they were climbers!
Deciding on what to put on the headstone is so hard! I had a hard time deciding what to put on Teagan's until I found out many places can do their hand/foot prints. We had them do Teagan's footprints and a simple butterfly image with a quote. It is really simple, but I think it is perfect for Teagan. Good luck searching for the perfect one for Ruby!

  2. I'm having the same problem with not knowing what to put on Owen's headstone. I want it to be perfect, it's so permanent! If you don't mind me asking, what city is Ruby buried? I live in Utah and if it's somewhere somewhat close to me I'd love to make sure there are always things on her grave. It bothers me when there aren't very many things on Owen's, so I'd love to do that for you if I can.

Her pictures are so beautiful. I love the phrase 'Now I lay me down to sleep.' It sounds so peaceful, and also (sorry it's random) I love the name of your blog. 'Come What May' is a tiny tattoo on my wrist I've had for a few years. Not that I don't regret that it's permanent, but honestly I love looking at that phrase and what it means. I'll keep an eye out for headstone ideas for ya too!

  3. You guys always make Ruby's grave look so cute. I am sure she loves it. I personally hate brussel sprouts. I got them once in Bountiful Baskets and I thought they tasted like poop. Maybe your recipe is better. :)

Potty training, we kept Ryan locked in his room for the most part, so I would say you can keep him in his crib and just put a pull up on him. They can leak though. Now I open his door before we go to bed so hopefully he doesn't do his morning pee in his pull up. So maybe if you hear him up, hurry and get him? I was much too lazy for this. :) But yes, pull ups and you're good!

It sounds like he is just growing up saying all those cute things. We sure miss you guys! I hope we can see you soon.

  4. When we started to train Brighton we moved him into a toddler bed. I really wished I would have never done that. I thought it was going to be necessary but it was not. Brighton couldn't go all on his own anyways. He always needed some help getting his underwear down. So I say if he is not crawling out of the crib keep him in there. We did pull ups at night and as soon as I knew or heard Brighton getting up for the day I would go in his room and say let's run fast and go pee pee. It was the same way when he was in a toddler bed but with the toddler bed he didn't sleep as good and he loved that he could get out of his room when he wanted. Let's just say after a month of less sleep i put Bright back in the crib and he couldn't be happier. I hope all that made sense Good Luck!! Potty training is tough and I never even made it the first time around.

  5. Rubys grave looks beautiful as always!!! You guys did a great job. Good luck on the potty training what an exiting time. I think he'd be fine too stay in the crib :0). Picking a headstone for your baby is so hard. Ill pray for you to be able to choose. Do what you feel is right for ruby. I love the idea for the color of granite. Hugs!!

  6. First I have to say is I love that Proverbs one - I think that is perfect!

Dentist . . . first visit is always hard. Both my kids wouldn't let them clean their teeth. They just got acquainted with the hygienist and the dentist came in and took a quick peek and counted their teeth. Next visit was much better. Good luck!

Yes!! Love brussel sprouts. I am new to them though as in this year! We have really taking a liking to them and have had them each holiday! You can saute them with olive oil, salt and pepper and then roast them in the oven! sooooo good!

  7. I have never tried to potty train with them in a crib. I think if he is ready you should give it a go. you may have to do pull-ups with him. I don't like to do that. Ike is the only one we have done that with, and I feel like it was the worst mistake we ever made because he still has accidents.

I like the color choice for the headstone. As far as what to put on it, I think you should just keep it simple and classic. I like the scripture also.

haven't tried brussel sprouts. nervous about that one. Have to give it a try.

tess has her first apt. in a few weeks. My kids first apt. has always been a disaster. More of getting used to being there. I think if they have a movie going Luke will be fine.

    Good Luck!!
Krysta has a great Potty training method that she posted on her blog. It is what I use, and it works great. She just posted it.

  9. I love how you guys decorate Ruby's grave. It always looks so beautiful. Brussel Sprouts -- Love them. I personally like to buy them frozen in a bag and steam them in my rice cooker with butter and garlic. I cook them until they are pretty soft. My kids Love them too. Get the kids on them early. They are so healthy. Potty training -- don't even try until he's 3. I like my kids to be in toddler beds before they potty train though. I really love the Proverbs scripture. Our Ruby was named from it so it hits home for us. Good luck with the headstone. Can't wait to see what you decide.

  10. Love Ruby's decorations, they are beautiful, the monkey is the cutest!!

Deciding on what to put on the headstone was the hardest for me because I wanted it to be perfect...for everyone to see it and say, "Wow, that baby was so loved." It's definitely a personal decision and I am sure it will be just beautiful.

Potty training sucks...plan and simple! :) But I would definitely wait until he is in a big boy bed, my opinion because if he needs to go to the bathroom...kids, especially BOYS, have to go NOW and can't wait for someone to come get them out of bed. I think it would be much more of a headache for you. But do what works for you, I found that I got so much advise from everyone that I finally had to find out for myself what works for me.

  11. So I totally think if it was me I would do the scripture. I think it is just so perfect.
Potty training and a crib is fine by me. My kids have both been "stuck" in their rooms while potty trained, and I haven't ever had an issue as long as I take them potty before bed. He'll probably let you know though too if it is.

  12. As far as potty training goes I would definitely say toddler bed all the way. But I don't recommend doing both at the same time. If he is ready for a toddler bed then do that and hold off on potty training for a little bit or the other way around. You don't want him to be totally dependent on you to go potty in the first place. Which is why I would not do it in a crib. I don't use pull ups though. You want them to feel like they are independent and real big kids. I think they are more successful when they feel like they are doing things on their own (even though mom is always supervising) I would try to stay away from pull ups. They learn so much faster with out them. It is hard work to change those sheets and it is no fun, but I would choose hard core teaching and get the whole ordeal over with rather than dragging it out f-o-r-e-v-e-r. I also think the best age to potty train a boy OR a girl is between 2 and 3. I try not to go past 2 1/2. They only get more stubborn and stuck in their ways. Ok, there you have it. :) I am no expert, but it is definitely a subject I feel strongly about. You are the only one who knows Luke and what to expect out of him. You have to make the best decision for your family.
P.S. I am so glad you got to make a very quick trip to visit Ruby's grave. You always make it look so cute.

  13. Brussell sprouts...really? I already talked to you about the PT thing. I think you should go with Proverbs, it's very special and so is Ruby. Simple and sweet.
