Name

Before we knew whether or not Ruby was a boy or a girl we started talking names.

We both thought for sure we were having a boy so we discussed boy names all the time, we finally had one we both liked.

This was quite the accomplishment since it took forever to come up with Luke’s name, and Luke isn’t a unique name. It’s quite common, but still it was hard.

When we found out it was a girl, we were back to the drawing board.

Since we thought Luke was a girl before we officially found out we had some girl names in mind.

One of those names was Ruby.

We had a couple others that I loved so I could never commit to Ruby.

Plus, I kept trying to come up with a meaningful middle name to go with Ruby and nothing clicked.

It wasn’t until after she was born that I finally said it’s Ruby.

We also liked the name June for a first name and even though it isn’t a family name it just fit with Ruby for a middle name instead.

A lot of us call her by her first and middle name.

We couldn’t have chosen a more perfect name for her.

There are so many things that remind me of her just because she is named Ruby.

I will never be able to see the color red without thinking of her.

I have a whole box of Ruby jewelry that is priceless to me.

After we got the news about how terminal Ruby was we decided we needed to give her a name and blessing as soon as possible.

Most of our family was able to gather in Vegas on such short notice.

Jared gave her a beautiful blessing on her one week birthday.

Ruby was on her best behavior and slept through the entire blessing.  (She was always on her best behavior, I think I heard her give a little whimper cry maybe twice)

She even wore her Ruby Red bow for the occasion.

It was a really special day, most of our family was meeting her for the first time.

I am so glad we decided on the name Ruby, she is one special angel.

  4. Kristen, I probably think of your daughter everyday mostly because my daughter is Ruby and they were probably good friends in the preexistence since they are so close in age. I can't get enough of hearing of her. Her life has brought many things in perspective for me. She is so beautiful and looks like Luke to me. How perfect she was able to receive her name and blessing in mortality. If you're around, I am hoping to attend Time Out for Women next year in Vegas. Let's keep in touch.

  8. A name and a blessing in the NICU is not what you plan on huh? Such a different day, it was for us anyway. I love the name Ruby. I love that it gives extra special everyday reminders.

  9. I loved how Andrea told me about her name -- because she is "more precious than rubies." I am so glad you had this beautiful opportunity for her to receive her name and a blessing. It must have been the most heavenly spiritual experience.
