The Gender

I have no motherly instinct when it comes to guessing the gender of my babies.

I thought Luke was a girl and Ruby was a boy.

My pregnancies with Luke and Ruby were so similar that I had nothing to base this pregnancy off of as far as knowing if it were a boy or girl.

We decided to wait awhile to tell people we were expecting mainly for 2 reasons:

1) Nerves!! I was extremely nervous about losing this baby and the overall health that I wanted to wait until after the first trimester and have an ultrasound done. I also needed to get my nerves under control and be at peace with whatever happened during this pregnancy.

2) I have a couple close friends and family members that are having a hard time getting pregnant right now. We decided to start trying for another child long before we would have if Ruby were with us. I got pregnant rather quickly and I didn’t want it to seem like I was rubbing it in anyone’s face that I was pregnant AGAIN.  I went through a couple years of not being able to get pregnant and even though you can be happy for someone else it can also be a big, fat flag in your face screaming they are pregnant and you’re not. I wanted to show my excitement and also be considerate of other people’s feelings and it all came down to timing.

When we found out we would be moving back to Utah I knew it would start to be rather obvious by my protruding belly that I was pregnant. I was about 17 weeks along and felt like it was the right time to let everyone know.

I knew I could also find out the gender since I was far enough long that I went in for a gender ultrasound before making the announcement.

It was obvious to me and the nurse it was definitely a boy.

I was a little surprised to find out it was a boy, but very, very excited for Luke to get a brother.

When I got home from the ultrasound I pinned a blue ribbon on Jared’s shirt that said, It’s a boy!

He was quite surprised as well.

Luke was super excited about the boy and ribbon.

We announced it in an email to everyone that we were due with a little boy:

We felt an overwhelming amount of love and support about this pregnancy and it helped to calm some of my nerves. I was able to talk through some of my fears and anxiety with friends that have been in the same position.

When I went to my OB appointment the next week she did a quick ultrasound and said it looked like it was a girl.

I thought the same thing by looking at the screen.

It just made me laugh.

For about a week and a half I was confused as to what the gender really was, but still thought it was a boy.

When I went to my 20 week ultrasound it was confirmed it was definitely a boy.

Coming from an all girl family it is kind of nerve racking knowing I am responsible for raising two boys, but we are so excited to meet him.

Now if we could just agree on a name.

Luke is adamant about it being a certain name so we will see if he wins in the end.

  1. I think mom's of boys should be given an award. My two boys are certainly harder than my girls. maybe it is that I only had sisters. I guess they aren't harder they are just louder and rougher. I am not used to that. I am so excited for you. I can't wait to meet and photograph the little thang.
