Potty “Train”ing

Warning: MAJOR bribery involved in this post, if you are opposed to bribing children do not keep reading.

Look who is potty-trained!

Luke has been doing so well with the potty, I am so proud of him.

However, it wasn’t until I found a reward for him that spoke his language that lit the fire under his bum (no potty talk intended).

I read up on all the ideas on how to potty train and I tried out a couple, but in the end he just wasn’t interested.

No sticker or candy was good enough for him.

I don’t think I was quite ready either. I personally like the convenience of diapers.

Running through the grocery store leaving a cartful of groceries behind so your child doesn’t pee all over the place is something I was okay postponing for awhile.

So we put it on hold.

We were at Toys R Us one day and Luke was enthralled with a train table they had set up for kids to play with.

He would have stayed there for hours if I let him.

The next day he asked to go back. And the next day, and the next….

Then the light bulb went off.

I went home and printed a picture of the train table with a potty chart under it.

I hung it up in his bathroom and waited until he noticed.

I told him the plan and he was so excited.

He would go in every morning and stare at the picture.

All of the sudden he was ready and willing to go potty.

Of course he decided that stickers and treats were also a necessity.

He started doing so well that I thought I better start looking for a train table quicker than I thought I would have to.

I found this beauty on Craigslist for $30.

Came with everything you see (retails in the store for $180).

Best $30 I ever spent.

Within a week he had earned it and was so excited the day we set it up.

I do think trying those other methods helped prepare him to be ready, so I don’t think they were bad methods at all.

The good news is he is still doing great with the potty even after earning the table (I was a little worried he would give up after he got the reward).

He stays dry through the night and during naps.

Now the real test will be when we go to Utah. I hope we can keep it up the progress.

Way to go Luke for potty “train”ing.

Here is a video for your viewing pleasure.

It’s a constant guessing game with him trying to figure out what he is saying between his use of words, sounds, and sign language.

You can tell how busy, yet funny this kid is.

  5. Way to go Luke! And way to go you! What a big milestone. My boy loves his train table too, he got it for Christmas a year and a half ago and I think it was the only toy he played with for (literally) 6 months straight. Definitely a good find of craigslist!
